Basecoat Application for Epoxy Flooring

Preparation

Before applying the basecoat, the concrete surface must be thoroughly cleaned to remove any dirt, debris, or grease. It should be mechanically abraded to create a rough surface that will allow the epoxy to adhere properly. Grinding or shot blasting are preferred methods for this preparation.

Typically, a primer is applied to the prepared surface. Priming improves the bonding between the concrete and the epoxy basecoat, ensuring a long-lasting and durable installation.

Application

The epoxy basecoat is typically applied in two coats. The first coat is mixed with a self-leveling agent. This first coat will self-smooth and flow throughout the surface, filling in minor imperfections and creating a flat and even surface.

Once the first coat has cured, a second coat is applied. The second coat serves to build thickness, offering increased strength, protection, and durability to the overall epoxy flooring system. The specific properties or desired finish of the epoxy flooring system will determine the number of coats required.

Benefits

  • Improved bonding and adhesion to the concrete surface
  • Provides a flat, level surface for subsequent epoxy layers
  • Increases the overall durability and strength of the epoxy flooring system
  • Can be tinted to match specific color requirements

Considerations

Epoxy flooring systems, including the basecoat application, should be installed by experienced professionals to ensure proper surface preparation, mixing, and application techniques. Curing times and environmental conditions are critical factors that impact the installation's success.
